When Bentley was little he was terrified of the water and would sit on the shore while all his siblings would dive into the water head first. We decided that we didn’t believe in the technique where people think it’s okay to throw a dog into water to get it used to it, so we didn’t force Bentley to do anything he didn’t want to do. We decided that he would go in the water when he was ready and not a moment sooner. That day came when he was around 1 year old. The most he had seen of water was a bath after he’d rolled in the mud and then one day, he jumped in without warning and never looked back. Now, we can’t keep him out of the water! Every chance he gets, he heads for the water and this morning was no exception. When he learned to jump off the dock it was a marvellous thing to watch! I must have looked like a crazy person, screaming and yelling and clapping congratulations until he swam all the way back to me. So, whenever we walk by the dock he runs out to the end and then looks back at me as if to beg me to throw something off it for him. I had thrown his purple frisbee off before and it floated, so I thought, why not? So I gave it a toss and off he jumped after it, only to have it sink!! We waited to see if it would float to the top but it just sank deeper and deeper and he swam around looking for it until I made him get out of the water. The poor thing then proceeded to look for it along the shore, which was quite smart, but alas, it was gone. He looked so unhappy in the end that I had to document his look of not quite understanding what had happened. Thankfully, though, it only lasted until he found a tree to bark at, then it was business as usual.
